My husband and I tried unsuccessfully to have a child for four years before we started the adoption process. As those who have adopted know, the adoption process is not easy. It involves hours of paperwork, interviews, home visits, and lots and lots of waiting. After waiting for a little over a year I received a phone call that would change my life forever.
At 4:17 a.m. on a cold morning about four years ago our case worker called us and told us we needed to pack our bags and get to Louisiana because our baby was on its way. I was not prepared for the emotions that I would feel that day. The one that surprised me the most was the unconditional love I felt for that tiny baby girl the instant that I saw her. I can’t explain it, but I knew she was my daughter and that she was meant to come to our family. At that moment I knew that being a mother had nothing to do with giving birth.

My daughter (and now my son) has been such a blessing in my life. They have taught me to be more patient, that I don’t know as much as I thought I did, that there is nothing better than cuddling with a newborn baby, hearing the word Mama for the best sound in the world, crayola pictures and dandelions are the best gifts and that I didn’t appreciate my mom nearly enough.
I am so grateful to the women that gave my children life and for their sacrifice that allow me to become a mother. Being a mom is the hardest, but the best thing that I have ever done- I wouldn’t change it for anything.
